"Have you seen one of the penis pumps?"

...was the question we got on the phone at work this morning.

Yes, someone at the Museum was looking for one of the three penis pumps in the collection, with some urgency (as you can imagine - when you need a penis pump you really need one) for some ad they were filming apparently. Something about having motorbike accidents and then breaking your penis. Or something. Apparently one had been borrowed last year to take to a conference (dear god I hope it was in a professional way) and the others (yes, there's more than one) are apparently here in our collections (which you can't access unless you are a collections staff member).

The girl looking for it thought we may have one of them out on one of our Touch Trolleys here.

Yes. Penis Pump. And Yes. Touch Trolley. I'm not sure of the appropriateness of the "Penis Touch Trolley" in a family museum. Our Touch Trolleys are more feathers and animal skins, and less penis related items.

Then she suggested maybe it was a prop in an old science show - the "Phallic Fun Show"? "Penis Power Show"? "Pump it up show"? Suffice to say we were stumped, but went searching for it anyway.

Mind you, I wouldn't know what it looked like - the description was along the lines of two cylinders with a pump. hmm... So I thought I'd do a quick search of the collections on our database, and here it is:

Kind of scary actually. And certainly not an object I have ever seen in my daily working life.

We couldn't find the penis pump, but it has provided endless mirth for us this morning.

    • I know it's very immature but I basically started sniggering with the first line of that and didn't stop until the end...heh heh
